In one of the few (and also the last) times I was able to actually access the site yesterday, I noticed the red bar across the top of the page with this message:

I needed to look up what a "syn attack" was! It is very much like the Ddos which CastleCops had been able to side step for much of the past three weeks.
Little has been posted about this over at CastleCops Deutsch where information is usually passed along to wondering staff. Here's hoping the outage is a short one.

Yes, there is yet another new version of QuickTime (7.4.5) with security fixes!  If you use Apple's QT Player, use the updater to get the latest version.
However, you can play QuickTime media files without installing Apple's QuickTime Player by using QuickTime Alternative. This installs just the codecs needed to play the files. There is a similar "product" called Real Alternative for playing RealMedia files without RealPlayer. Both include an open source Media Player clone called Media Player Classic but are available in "Lite" versions without MPC. If you are going to install both and want MPC, I would suggest that you download the Lite versions and install MPC separately but if you are only installing one of them you may as well download the full version which includes MPC. You can get them from various places but the two that I use are:

This is not a security alert as such but it is almost a stealth install so, as far as I am concerned, it comes into this category!
Apparently, the QuickTime/iTunes updater now installs the Safari Web browser by default unless you deselect it when updating. As the updater was mainly meant for security updates, this is very bad indeed. In particular, it could really confuse less experienced users when they suddenly find another Web browser on their PC that they didn't ask for or want.

Bruce Schneier (the cryptography and security expert) writes a regular newsletter called Crypto-Gram. This is not just about cryptography, it is about security in general. He talks a lot of sense and it is a shame that politicians do not seem to listen to his excellent articles on how to get real security. The lead article in this month's issue on Security vs. Privacy is very interesting indeed.
