Peggy handed me a piece of newspaper with this web address on it:
http://www.haltadefinizione.com
talking about how DaVinci's masterpiece is now traveling across the internet at 16 billion pixels.
There is a link to a "backstage" video, showing how this was all set up, and another of an interview with Alberto Artioli {Superintendent of Cultural Heritage Milan} (in Italian with English subtitles).
The real centerpiece of course, is "The Last Supper" which you can now view in detail previously available to a select few. Flash is needed to do this. Click on the image you want to view; when the next page opens up, choose the "LOOK" tab across the top of the page to open up the interactive flash video, and yes, you can turn off the music too!
In addition, three other images are available for viewing at mind-numbing resolution, the first two of these also paintings: - Gaudenzio Ferrari, Vita di Cristo @ 8.6 Gpixel Image
- Andrea Pozzo, Gloria di Sant'Ignazio @ 9.8 Gpixel Image, AND
- Cupola di Novara @ (a mere
) 300 Mpixel Image
At the very bottom of the page you'll see "Copyright 2006-2007 HAL9000 S.r.l.".
and at the very top of this page here you see, "Across 50,000 Light Years
... from halfway across the galaxy
- where fiction meets fact"
You've just been notified of a computer page written by the computer from "2001 - A Space Odyssey". |

| MILAN, Italy — Can’t get to Milan to see Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece “The Last Supper?” As of Saturday, all you need is an Internet connection. Officials put online an image of “The Last Supper” at 16 billion pixels — 1,600 times more detail than the images taken with the typical 10 million pixel digital camera. |
