|
|
I have a Shimano DXR Hub set and I have now broken the rear axle twice. Both times in the same spot, right at the end of the bolt where it threads into the axle. I believe this is because of the hollow axle. I love the engagement and weight of the hub, but it is clear the axle is sh_t! So i was thinking of having a machine shop build be a solid axle. I have been thinking I want to have a Ti one built but is Ti really that much stronger? I don't want to add any more weight than I have to, and I don't want to have any more axles snapping!

I know for a fact that a lot of the top riders that ride for Shimano don't like those hubs at all.. I know one AA pro that went through about 5 or 6 last season alone. The hollow axle is a bad idea for any older rider. Ti won't be a lot stronger, but it will be much lighter. Ti also flex's a lot. So maybe some flex might do it some good if the material is thin at that spot in the axle. Chromoly would probably be the best if your machinist can do that. It's too bad we have to machine our own parts because some roadie/engineer over looked the amount of stress we put on things.
Another flaw I experienced from Shimano.

I have never seen a spider rip off a set of cranks. When I called Shimano to let them know how "unsatisfied" I am with this product they told me that this was the first time they heard of this happening. I then told them this was the 2nd time for me and I have heard of many more. It is great they have replaced my parts at no charge, but nothing is going to fix the damage to the hub body from the cone and axle ripping off.
Shimano- If you are going to release your "flagship" grouppo, DXR, and you are going to market it to "your elite olympic athlete's" then mayvbe some more time should be spent in R&D. In the mean time make a dam $10 cromo axle for your $600 hubset! |
