What are the advantages/disadvantages of using smaller to larger gear combos using the same gear ratio?
ie...38:14 vs 44:16?
thanks

| Some say the smaller gears are harder on the chain. Also, there are very slight differences in the gear inches between them. Donny Robinson uses a 50-18 on 170mm cranks and he swears by the larger gears |

the larger gears are supposed to take less effort to push..
a smaller movement at the pedal will drive the bike further.. running the mini gear set up would be the opposite..
im a believer in the conventional gearing.. 4 4 / 16 on every track in every condition... the odd time ill put an easier gear on for a big race on a tight indoor track.. _________________ Leonard Kilgour

| It's all about torque and leverage. Bigger gears = more leverage which equals less torque required to turn the wheel. Which also puts less stress on all related components. Smaller gears are opposite and the added stress wears out or breaks chains. The trick guys go through chains and drivers all the time because of the micro gearing. |
