the Chelan County PUD.

Chelan County PUD is hoping a strong police presence on the
Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail will cut down on the number
of �unwholesome activities� that occur during the busy summer
months.

The PUD has hired off-duty Wenatchee Police officers to patrol
their parks on bikes from 5 to 9 every night until Labor Day.

Police Chief Tom Robbins said officers will be on the lookout for
�things that aren�t appropriate in a park setting with lots of families
gathered. Basically, anything unsafe or illegal.�

PUD Security Director Bill Larson said there has not been a huge
influx of criminal activity, but there have been a few more complaints
from the public than normal about rowdy people, alcohol, graffiti,
vandalism and littering.

�We got a sense that citizens who go to enjoy the park were telling
us that they couldn�t fully do that,� he said. �So we wanted to be
proactive and increase the police presence. Basically, we want to
stay ahead of the curve and let people know we care that they
have a wholesome atmosphere in our parks.�

The bike patrol, running from the north end of Walla Walla Point
Park to the Orondo boat launch, began Aug. 6. Larson said the PUD
will evaluate around Labor Day whether to extend the program to
the end of September.

Off-duty officers who sign up for the bike patrol
are being paid $61.81 per hour by the PUD.

Larson said the price was negotiated between the PUD and WPD.
�It�s my understanding that�s an overtime rate of pay,� he said.
Officer Seth Carlson was one of the officers on patrol Aug. 11
and 12.

He said he�s written citations to people who brought alcohol to the
parks and issued warnings to pet owners who don�t have their dogs
on leashes.

They also arrested a man who had an outstanding warrant,
he said.

Police are also helping the PUD educate people
about the 10 mph speed limit on the Loop Trail.

Parks Manager Ray Heit said the PUD painted the speed limit
on the trail surface to remind people of the restriction.

He also said the PUD is moving the reader board that says
how fast a person is traveling to various places on the trail.

�Most people don�t have speedometers on their bikes,� Heit said.
�So this is just to help them to know what 10 mph feels like.�

Larson said the police can�t enforce the speed limit with
any kind of citation because there is no actual ordinance.

�But if they saw someone doing something extreme and dangerous
that was endangering the public, they could write a ticket for reckless
endangerment,� he said.

The PUD has also enlisted the help of Merchant Patrol Security Co.
in Wenatchee with a dedicated foot patrol Mondays through Fridays,
5 to 10 p.m.

Larson said those employees are being paid $26.50 per hour,
but they don�t have the authority to write citations.

Heit said nearly all of the feedback received from the public
since the program started has been positive, �especially from
families who said they like seeing the police down there.�

Carlson said, �Lots of people have come up and told us,
�Thanks for being here.��

The information technology manager at Alcoa�s Wenatchee
Works was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center
in Seattle Monday afternoon with injuries suffered in a bicycle
accident Sunday afternoon.

Lt. Kent Sisson, a spokesman for the Chelan County Sheriff�s
Office, said Mark B. Lindman, 57, of Malaga, was apparently
riding with his head down on the Malaga-Alcoa Highway about
3:30 p.m. when he struck a car that was parked alongside the
highway. The accident happened at the intersection of the high
way and Hedges Road.

Sisson said the driver of the car had pulled over to talk
on his cell phone, and was legally parked off the roadway.

Lindman was first treated at Central Washington Hospital,
then was transferred to Harborview. Sisson said Lindman
suffered a spinal injury.

The Regional Bike Advisory Board is seeking more members to
help develop a bicycle master plan for Wenatchee, East Wenatchee
and Rock Island.

Patrick Walker, bicycle and pedestrian planner for the Wenatchee
Valley Transportation Council, said currently there are seven board
members from Wenatchee and East Wenatchee.

�All members ride bicycles on a regular basis for work, pleasure
or utility,� he said. �We are looking for people who have interest
and the desire to help in making their community more bicycle
friendly.�

Walker said he�d like to see at least four more people on the board,
�but if we get seven qualified applicants, we wouldn�t turn them away.�

The only live online Chelan County Scanner Feed that
we know of is hosted on www.golakechelan.com We do
do not know if it has the frequency`s for this working

Since 2001-2 not much has happend Re Pioneer Park
for the BMX dirt jumps next to the skate park. Not to
many people push for it to happen and it was dropped.

Today;
Word in the grape vine is that the city of Wenatchee
has plans to re-do Pioneer Park in all IE: the pool,
the skate park and a lots of the park toys extra. I do
not know when this is to happen but in the news back
in 2008 the parks and rec started to do some stuff: see:

Not to much is said about that today but that was there
plans and it was to also add BMX dirt jumps in to it all..
With nothing happing on that Im guessing its a flop too?

If someone was going to add something BMX in to the
Wenatchee area I would say that Pioneer Park is NOT
one of the best places to do it. Find some other park
in Wenatchee for BMX is what I would say as you have
the pool and skate park that will and does over power the
sport of BMX in the Pioneer Park. IE the River Front park,
and or Walla Walla Point Park areas are nice places for
BMX. Them are top dog parks to push for BMX. I would
say support for them areas would or could be of a big high
as there is not to much in them park for youth or people to
do. Not to say, River Front, Walla Walla Point Parks do
host a bicycle trail in the first place ( The loop trail ) The
support from the bicycling community its self would help.

If someone was to push for BMX in to Wenatchee
I would also say push for a sanctioned BMX track
like the one in Moses Lake. It has lots of city pride.

The city of Wenatchee / the PUD Parks would take more
pride in to something that is organised like the ABA BMX
than as just dirt jumps/lumps in a park. A sanctioned track
could be used for everything. Even dirt jumping if it is built
right. The ABA BMX helps build it for free if the right steps
are done via in the people pushing for it.

And yes, I know a big difference in BMX Dirt Jumps Vs
An ABA BMX Racing sanctioned dirt track. But if you
want something like the Dirt Jumps You need to start
off the right way to make what you want. I would stress
to go with using the ABA BMX sanction to start off. It
would help your group and everyone in the long run of it.

To get things going:

To start anything you would have to get ahold of the
city of Wenatchee Parks and Rec also the PUD Parks
and find out what steps you would have to take to start.

Signed petitions would not hurt but do not get your hopes
up to much with just petitions. It takes more than that, like
people turn out for the city or PUD meetings. If people do
not show up to meeting, the city/pud puts the BMX at the
bottom of the pile. People power at the city/pud parks
meetings shows big interest to the city /pud councils.

As seen in the past in Wenatchee, people will show
up to a few meetings and then get bored with it and not
show up to other meeting and BMX flops out. I stress,
people power all the way or it will not go to fare for you.

I will try and help support anything BMX in Wenatchee
PR News or anything on the world wide web in support.
Pushing city / pud council Im not going to go gun-hoe
out of my way like I have back in the 1980s, 90s, and
2001 as most has flopped. If someone was to get the
ball rolling with a BMX sanction and it looked like BMX
would take off in Wenatchee like in Moses Lake I might
step it up more.

I hope this can help you out some.

Law officers to lazy to get out and beef up extra patrols at
some intersections in Wenatchee? They now use cameras for
there patrols, sit at a desk to review videos and mail a ticket.

We say it is just flat out laziness. -- But the city of Wenatchee
Council gave the go-ahead for law enforcement officers to use
red light cameras for patrols. - This is a good way for the police
officers to develop a interaction relationship with the public. This
makes for good value. To protect and serve with a camera only.
-- I feel more safe already. But it is not about being safe in the
community, It is all about the money. Or is it? Only time will tell.

A 30-day warning period began June 1st for red light runners
at three busy city intersections fitted with new traffic cameras.

Motorists who run red lights at the three intersections June 1st
through June 30th will be photographed by the citys new red light
cameras, but will receive only warning notices in the mail.

Starting July 1st, 2010 enforcement will begin.
Violators will receive tickets in the mail for $124.

Bicycles & Pedestrians, your best to obey the traffic laws
and do not ride or walk on the red lights as it is a traffic
violation if you do. But if you do, -- do not look up at the
cameras, you might just get a ticket.. If the cameras can
not see a face how can a ticket be sent? -- Just obey the
traffic laws and save your self from all the troubles........

The three intersections are:

* Southbound on Chelan Avenue at Fifth Street.

The intersections are also marked by photo enforcement signs.

* On Thursday June 3rd 2010, about 4:30pm on are photo
tour of the red light cameras, we did see the warning signs
letting us know of the red light cameras about 1/2 of a block
before the intersections. The signs are somewhat hard to see.
But they are there so it is not red light camera entrapment.

The cameras cost about $4,500 per month at each of the three
intersections for a total monthly fee of about $13,500 paid to
American Traffic Solutions.

Revenue generated by the tickets will go toward the monthly fee.
If revenue from tickets isnt enough to cover the entire fee, the
American Traffic Solutions, not the city, will absorb the shortfall.
The city keeps ticket revenue that exceeds vendors monthly fee.

July 1st, 2010 Violators will receive tickets in the mail for $124.

The infraction is issued against the cars registered owner,
like a parking ticket, so your insurance rates and drivers license
(WILL NOT) be affected. However, if you fail to pay the fines and
or respond to the court in the time allowed, the Department of
Licensing can hold your vehicle tabs until the fine and all related
late fees are paid.

Photographic and video images of violation events are sent
electronically from the traffic safety camera system to the
ATS data center where they are reviewed against criteria
established by the Wenatchee Police Department.

Events that clearly are not violations are rejected at the data center.
Trained officers at the Wenatchee Police Department, who authorize
issuance of citations for those deemed in violation, review events
that appear to meet Wenatchee Police Department criteria.

CCTV and real time cameras should be at just about every street
intersection in Wenatchee to help the police officers in there calls.
Sometimes cameras can or do help out to get the truth of the story.
But the cameras should not be used as a replacement of the law
officers in patrolling the roadways, intersections or a tool for money.

I do not know about you, but I would rather see a live police officer
in a city cop car patrolling the intersections. A cop car just sitting
on a side of a road makes people think twice. Having the red light
cameras makes people think that they are in a Hollywood movie.

As we where shooting the photo above on Chelan Avenue
at Fifth Street on Thursday June 3rd 2010, about 4:30pm
We just happen to get a photo shot of a car that was going
the wrong way, Northbound on Chelan Avenue. --This was
a scary thing to see. Luckley the car did not get in to a crash.
Did red light cameras do any good for this wrong way driver?

in the Spokane, Washington area. It does not sound like the
red light cameras are helping to much in the city of Spokane.

The Photo Red Program has had mixed results in Spokane since its
inception. They are supposed to encourage the reduction of collisions,
particularly t-bone and rear end collisions. However while rear-end
collisions have dropped the number of T-bone crashes have increased.
Statistics show overall the number of crashes have not decreased since
the first Photo Red cameras were installed and police say they need
another year of data to determine if the cameras are working.

The Wenatchee Ride of Silence is Wednesday May 19th, 2010.

Please come and join the Wenatchee Valley Velo Bicycle Club
at 6:30pm meeting in the parking lot behind the Wenatchee
Convention Center.

May 19th is the eighth annual Ride of Silence. This is a global
ride that is taking place to raise awareness of cyclists� right to
the road and to honor cyclists that have been killed or injured
in accidents.

WVV secretary Scott Tidd is the ride organizer and you can find
more information about the ride on the home page of the club
website ( www.bikewenatchee.org ). Please tell your bike riding
friends about the Ride of Silence. It is free and available to all
riders. We are hoping to get a large turnout for this event.

Cyclists Pedal In Comrades Honor For Ride Of Silence

Photo - Dr. Michael Fadich leads about 45 other bikers in the Ride
of Silence. Fadich was Wenatchee�s latest high-profile victim of a
car-vs.-bicycle collision, run over April 19 on North Miller Street.

It was Michael Fadich�s first night back
on the road, and he wasn�t pedaling alone.

The Wenatchee physician was bicycling April 19 when he was
struck and run over by a motorist, who then drove away from
the scene. Fadich survived, with multiple broken ribs and a
broken shoulderblade. His first ride on a non-stationary bike
since the accident was Wednesday�s Ride of Silence, in honor
of cyclists who�ve experienced his pain, and worse.

�It�s one month today since I was hit, and I�m just so grateful,�
Fadich said, just a few minutes before he and some 44 other
cyclists took off from the Wenatchee Convention Center for the
evening ride. �I was pretty � I don�t know how to put it � torn
up, emotional, nervous, scared about how it was gonna come
out. But I finally feel like, yeah, I�ll be fine.�

The national ride, organized in 2003 in Texas, puts cyclists on
the public streets one night each year to recognize killed or
injured bike users, and to reinforce the right of cyclists to share
the road with cars and trucks. The local effort was organized by
the Wenatchee Valley Velo club.

With a police escort, the 12 mph ride wound through Wenatchee�s
downtown, as far north as Ninth Street and as far south as Orondo
Avenue. Fadich led the procession, after an opening statement from
Dr. Ed Farrar, another Wenatchee victim of a car-vs.-bike accident.

�We�re gonna all leave here and go forward in life, and that means
that each one of us is gonna be out on the roads and at risk of being
injured,� said Farrar, paralyzed by his October 2008 collision and
speaking from the seat of his Quickie hand-powered cycle. �And I
can guarantee you that some of us in this room are gonna get hit by
a car, next year, the year after. So it�s a problem that�s gonna go
forward with us.�

Farrar was hit on Skyline Drive by a motorist who took his eyes
off the road to pick up a dropped clipboard. The accident left him
paralyzed from the chest down; he now bicycles on his hand bike
every day the weather allows. He�s participated in every local Ride
of Silence since its start.

�The ride in 2008 was on two wheels, and the ride in 2009 was
on a hand cycle,� Farrar said. �We never know when it�s gonna
happen to us. It�s pretty humbling.�

Farrar settled a lawsuit in March against the driver who struck him
and the driver�s employer; a negligent driving citation was issued
in that case. Fadich was riding on Miller Street when a pickup driver
allegedly turned in front of him, then ran over him with a rear tire
while fleeing the scene.

Michael R. Copeland of Monitor awaits trial on charges of vehicular
assault, hit-and-run attended with injury, and driving on a suspended
license in Fadich�s accident.

�As cyclists, we have to fight for our rights,� Fadich said. �I can�t say
I�ve ever really done that, and now I�m determined to do that. I�m
actually angry.�

Fadich proposed three steps for safer cycling: education for
drivers on cyclist�s rights; penalties to deter irresponsible driving
that endangers cyclists; and better bike-route infrastructure in
Wenatchee, such as more designated lanes.

He said he�ll never bike his old Miller Street
route during commuting hours again.

�I think that cyclists need to obey the law and set a good example,�
Fadich said. �... The second thing is, you�ve always got to ride
defensively. If you lose against steel, it doesn�t matter how right
you are. But sometimes you just don�t have any control over it.�

Immigration Reform Sparks Federal-Local Concerns In The
United States. A Immigration Reform March Took Place Down
South Wenatchee Ave. On Saturday May 01st, 2010.

The march from Walla Walla Point Park to Lincoln Park began
about 5 p.m. Several Wenatchee streets where temporarily
closed Saturday evening during the Immigration Reform March.

About 300 marchers started out at the Walla Walla Point Park,
and a similar number of marchers joined in along the route to
Lincoln Park. - In all, about 600 to 700 marched in Wenatchee.

The Wenatchee Immigration Reform march looked all peaceful like
as it was marching down the streets of Wenatchee. No problems that
we seen. - A few police cars and a few police motorcycles and police
bicycles seen. The Police officers where seen keeping the peace well.

As I was shooting the hand full of photos seen on S. Wenatchee Ave.
I had three-3 people ask me, What are they saying / chanting about?

I understand just a little but no comprende, its a riddle, - U.S. inflation?
They where in march to Reform Immigration Laws, calling on Congress
and President Obama to reform the nation's immigration system.

If people can not understand what is being chanted as the people march
down the street. How is there ever going to be change. Just Maybe if the
march chant was being yelled out in English the point might have came
across to everyone.

As we where leaving the S. Wenatchee Ave. area we where over hearing
a good hand full of people talking down about Mexican people. -- In other
words, hate talk. Some of the hate talk had some good points and some
of it was just slur speech due to lots of the people not understanding each
other.

English is the set standard language in the U.S.A. If people want people
to understand what is what, say it, chant it in English or things may just
stay the same as they are or get worse.

A lot of hate gets created among people if people can not understand
one another. --- A common ground with in people to understand one
another in the U.S.A. is the English language. - If people want to stop
the hate in the U.S.A., then it would be wise for everyone to use the
set standard language, - English.....

Wenatchee Valley Bike To Work Day - Get Out And Ride!
National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 21st! 2010

If you aren�t already bike commuting in Wenatchee Valley,
this is a great time to get started! The Wenatchee Valley
Transportation Council�s Regional Bicycle Advisory Board,
VELO Club, and volunteers will provide refreshments for
bicyclists in the Valley that check in at two separate locations
on May 21st, 2010.

Also, leading up to this event will be the Criterion Ride,
Junior Ridge to River, and Ride of Silence!

Refreshment stations will be located at 9th Street NE and the
Loop Trail in East Wenatchee and 5th Street and the Loop Trail
in Wenatchee, so stop by on your way to work for coffee, juice,
fruit and pastries, get counted as a biker and maybe join one
of the Valley�s bike or pedestrian advocacy groups!

opened for the season on April 1, but county commissioners are
leaning toward closing it until they can address neighbors� concerns.

Chelan County commissioners might close a small parking area
for the Sage Hills Trail this week until they can address neighbor
hood concerns.

Commissioners said Monday they are leaning toward closing the
parking spot off Day Drive because the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust
has not taken required steps to put in landscaping, install signs and
control dust. Pedestrian access to the trail would remain open from
Day Drive, but parking would be closed.

�The Land Trust is not mitigating the impacts,� Commissioner
Ron Walter said. The county has received numerous calls, e-mails
and letters from neighbors complaining about traffic, illegal parking
and noise at the trailhead since it opened for the season April 1.

Neighbors have been complaining for the last few years, as use of
the trailhead increased. Several times they have improperly put up
signs in the parking lot stating that it was private property and no
parking was allowed.

Land Trust Director Bob Bugert said Monday that he was not aware
that the commissioners were considering a closure of the parking lot.
He said it would be a �hardship� for trail users if the lot were closed.

The site has been used as a public access to the Sage Hills Trail
�for years and years,� Bugert said. The trail access and trailhead
are situated in a designated open space area, so the Land Trust
is not required to have a permit for the parking lot.

However, the county can impose conditions on the parking area.

Bugert said the Land Trust has been working closely with the
city and the county on a plan that will help address neighborhood
concerns at the trailhead. Bugert said he met with property owners
last Friday to talk about it. The Land Trust has submitted a plan to
the county that includes installing an electronic gate, surfacing the
parking area, putting in fencing and signs, and surfacing part of
nearby Kukaburra Road.

�That would put us beyond what mitigations
would be required of us,� Bugert said.

He said the work is scheduled to be done sometime this summer.

Commissioners said Monday that they will consider
closing the trailhead until the measures are completed.

�We need to have some definitive direction or action,�
Commissioner Keith Goehner said, because problems
are �escalating.�

�I thought we had things resolved,� he added. �It�s pretty
obvious we don�t. But I would like it to be resolved.�

Commissioner Doug England also talked about closing the
parking lot but still allowing pedestrian access to the trail
from that area until a trailhead is properly developed.

The Land Trust has long-term plans to develop a new trailhead
near the existing one but farther off Day Drive and away from
homes. The proposal includes putting in a landscape buffer,
signs, litter control and dust control. But the organization is still
gathering funds for that project.

In the meantime, the Land Trust has done nothing at the current
trailhead location to address neighbor concerns, said David Grimes,
acting director of the Chelan County Community Development
Department, who is working with the organization and landowners
on a solution.

�The conditions have not been met,� he said.
�Until they are met, the parking lot shouldn�t be used.�

County commissioners have decided not to close a trailhead
parking area in a residential neighborhood afterall, but instead
will put up signs warning people not to park on the road.

Commissioners had said Monday they were considering closing
the parking area at the end of Day Drive until the Chelan-Douglas
Land Trust completes measures to mitigate conflict between trail
users and neighboring property owners.

Commission Chairman Keith Goehner said Tuesday that because
the Land Trust has an easement to use the parking area, it would
be difficult for the county to close it. He said acting Community
Development Director David Grimes will continue to work with
the Land Trust on a plan to improve the lot.

He said the county�s primary concern is making sure people are
not parking on the county road and blocking access to private
homes. Last weekend, neighbors complained that cars were parking
in the middle of Kookaburro Run, a private road off Day Drive, and
preventing people from reaching their homes.

�At this point, all we can do within our authority is make sure
the road stays open and doesn�t get cluttered with parking,�
Goehner said. �That�s why we went the direction that we did.�

The commissioners asked the Public Works Department on
Tuesday to put up �No Parking� signs along Day Drive near
the parking area and also to put a sign marking the end of
the county road.

�We don�t have the authority to close the parking lot,� said
Penny Goehner, office manager for the Public Works Department.
�We can only control what happens on the county right-of-way.�

Last weekend, neighbors living around the parking lot called and
e-mailed county officials complaining about traffic, noise and parking
problems. Grimes said the county also received 10 letters.

Laurel Fife, who lives closest to the lot, said that one
vehicle was parked in the middle of Kookaburro Run.

Complaints about the parking lot, which is used to reach the
Sage Hills Trail, increased sharply last year as the number
of people parking there increased.

Fife said the trail access from Day Drive has been used by the
public for decades. But people did not park on Day Drive to reach
it until 2007, when the Land Trust put up boulders and created a
small parking area. She said use of the lot increased in 2008 and
�went crazy� in 2009.

�People were arriving before daylight and
staying until after dark,� she said.

Fife said she thought the county had already closed the parking lot.
There was a temporary closure over the winter when the trail was
closed to lessen impacts on wildlife. But the trail reopened for the
season on April 1, along with the parking area.

Fife said neighbors have hired a lawyer and are
exploring their options for taking legal action to
close the lot.

�The condition and safety of the roads are an issue,� she said.
�The commissioners have the power to say this is not safe.�

This is getting even more interesting now....... I am a user of
the Sage Hills/Foot Hills Trails from time to time on a BMX bike.

We say if the neighborhood concerns are about parking - why
not just have people park down town Wenatchee and or start
off from there homes and then bike, hike, jog up 5th Street to
the start of the trail head. -- It is not that fare from down town
Wenatchee to do so. -- People do need to have respect for the
neighbors that do live around the Sage Hills/Foot Hills Trails....

The Sage Hills/Foot Hills Trails should NOT be about the
parking problems, dust problems or any kind of problems.

If people was to leave the cars behind then that would help
solve the parking problem at the trail head, - You think......

Beezley Burn brings in cyclists of all ages
Children, adults compete in the bike races.

Strong gusts of wind were not enough to keep bicyclists
away from the Beezley Burn competition Saturday.

Many locals and travelers from out of town gathered at Oasis Park
in Ephrata to compete in a short track race held by members of the
Vicious Cycle bike club. Some came from as far as Redmond to
participate.

�I heard about the race from a pro racer, who participated last
year, and I thought this sounded like a good way to get some
exercise and meet new people,� said Molly Martin, a beginner
racer. �I wanted to come try out short track racing because I
have never done it before.�

Martin took first place in the beginner�s race. She was
cheered on by friends and fellow bike club members.

�I�m most excited about finishing,� Martin said.
�The energy you get afterwards feels great.�

The short track course lasted 15 minutes. Beginners, sport and
pro riders competed at separate times throughout the day.

�I had a lot of fun participating in the race today and definitely want
to do it again,� said Brooklynn Maedke, 11. �I came here because
this is my dad�s event and I wanted to go out and have fun with
people.�

Maedke planned on attending races on Sunday as well.

�I really like bicycling,� she said. �I ride my bike with
my family a lot in the summer and springtime.�

A tougher course was set for Sunday and many competitors
rode an eight-mile lap through Lion�s Park. The course is rough
and challenging because it includes some rocky sections and
steep hills.

Wyatt McCreary, 11, participated in the beginner�s race Saturday
to prepare for Sunday�s more challenging course, the Beezley Burn.

�I had a good time,� he said.

Suzie Hedges came from Seattle to observe the races Saturday.
She planned on competing in Sunday�s sport race.

�It�s a nice, warm sunny day today and I have
really enjoyed myself here so far,� Hedges said.

Pro bikers raced four laps on Sunday; those participating for sport
cycled two times around the course and beginners raced one lap.
Awards were presented as each race finished and prizes awarded
based on finish times.

want to encourage the younger participants to get out and ride
their bikes.�

throughout the event.

�Saturday�s course is very spectator-friendly because
you can watch people the whole time,� Maedke said.

The first race starts at 2:30 p.m. and the last race begins at 5 p.m.
The race is at Oasis Park, located at 2541 Basin St. S.W. in Ephrata.

�The great thing about this event is that it brings in people from out
of town to race,� Maedke said. �It�s also important to have fitness
activities in the community to encourage a healthy lifestyle.�

Vicious Cycle members have hosted the race since 2005.
They noticed an increase in local participation last year,
Maedke said.

�Every year we see more and more locals out there biking,�
Maedke said. �It also creates an interest in cycling for people.�

Sunday�s race is an eight-mile lap starting on a gravel road,
taking participants across an irrigation canal and up onto Beezley
Hill. The course is rough and challenging because it includes some
rocky sections and steep hills.

Sunday�s race is at Lion�s Park, next to Parkway Boulevard
in Ephrata. Pro bikers race at 9 a.m. and go four laps, those
participating for sport go two laps at 11 a.m. and beginners
race one lap at 12:30 p.m.

Awards are presented as each race finishes on Sunday. There
are many different prizes handed out and a $2,000 pro payout
given to the fastest cyclist based on overall finish times from
both races.

Stevens Pass to build mountain bike park.

A new mountain bike park for Washington's Stevens Pass Ski
Resort has been approved by the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National
Forest, which manages the land where the resort operates on U.S.
2 between Everett and Wenatchee.

The project will also include a new water treatment system for the
ski area. The Forest Service approved the proposed plan on Tuesday.

The mountain bike park will include seven miles of downhill
mountain bike trails just south of the Granite Peaks ski lodge.

Ski area management says the park will increase use of the property
in the summer and meet a growing demand for mountain biking.

Public response to this proposal was mostly supportive.
