*** Welcome To Wenatchee Yahoo! Inc. ***
Wenatchee, Washingtion -- 11/08/2006
It is not everyday that the founder of a major
Internet company travels to Wenatchee.
But that will be the scene Nov. 16th, 2006 as
Yahoo co-founder David Filo is expected to
attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for the company's
new data center in the heart of the state's apple
growing industry.
The Chief Yahoo will join other executives in introducing
the new facility, which they say will help bring a better
Internet experience to some 500 million users.
It might not be the only ribbon cutting ceremony in
Central Washington, which is catering to big Internet
companies with cheap hydroelectric power rates.
Microsoft Inc, Sabey Corp, Ask.com, Software company
Intuit and others are setting up shop in the region too.
And just how will the Yahoo! execs celebrate?
They plan to host a reception at the Chateau Faire
Le Pont winery, which is conveniently located across
the street from the new data center.

Center in Olds Station, Yahoo! officials from left, Kevin Timmons,
Lars Rabbe and co-founder David Filo joke around with the large
scissors they and Wenatchee Mayor Dennis Johnson used to cut the
ribbon. Yahoo! had a ceremonial opening for its new data center at
the CTC. It will fill the third floor of the facility with computer severs
that will help operate the companys online services. -- The event
attracted about 120 people on Thursday November 16th, 2006.
Thursday November 16th, 2006 was Yahoo! Day
in Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington.
But even without that official proclamation,
it likely couldn’t have been considered anything else.
Yahoo! officials held a ceremonial opening of their new data
center at the Confluence Technology Center in Olds Station.
“On behalf of the more than 11,000 Yahoo! employees
around the world, thank you for creating a tremendous
environment here,” David Filo, Yahoo! co-founder told
about 120 local officials from the city, county, ports, PUD
and state legislature who were on hand to celebrate and
tour the new center.
Company officials touted the business-friendly environment,
low-cost power, high-speed fiber-optics network, dry climate
and educated work force for luring them to Chelan County.
Moments later, Filo used gigantic scissors to snip a crisp
purple ribbon stretched across the building’s entrance.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has invested some
$12 million to transform the CTC’s third floor into a high-tech,
super-powered and cooled paradise for racks and racks of
high-capacity computers that Filo called his company’s “lifeblood.”
The servers will be installed by early next year.
Once the center hums to life, it will operate around the clock.
Yahoo! will use this center, and more than 25 others across
the United States and world, to store Web search data, customer
e-mails, Web services and more.
The company next year expects to open an even
larger center that it’s building on 50 acres in Quincy.
“The Yahoo! colors may be purple and yellow, but we think
it’s a red-letter day,” Port of Chelan County Commissioner
Mike Mackey told the crowd. The CTC is jointly owned by the
port and the Chelan County PUD.
“Eastern Washington cannot rely on agriculture to power its economy,”
said state Sen. Linda Evans Parlette during her turn at the mic.
She pointed to technology companies as a good complement to
the region’s ag base.
Wenatchee Mayor Dennis Johnson said, “This is a company
that is oriented to the people who work for them. They will
be an excellent neighbor.”
Johnson also praised the port for its record of buying and
developing land for regional economic development.
Gov. Chris Gregoire, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and U.S. Rep.
Doc Hastings all sent letters of support that touted Yahoo!’s
contribution to area economic growth and jobs.
A snipping before Yahoo! sipping,
Kevin Timmons, Yahoo!’s vice president of operations,
clearly had something else on his mind as he anchored
the list of speakers. Timmons had already concluded the
event and invited everyone to wine and treats at nearby
Chateau Faire Le Pont winery. Then someone from the
audience pointed out a minor oversight.
“Cut the ribbon!” someone yelled.

*** Yahoo! Eyes 20 More Acres For Quincy Data Center ***
Quincy, Washington -- 02/06/2007
Yahoo! wants to buy 20 more acres from the Port of Quincy to
possibly expand the data center the company is building there.
Patric Connelly, Port of Quincy commissioner, said the land adjoins to
the northeast the 50-acre site that Yahoo! bought from the port last year.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Internet-services company broke ground
on its Quincy data center in July and expects to complete construction
later this year.
Curt Morris, port commission president, said the port will get two
appraisals on the 20-acre property and hold public hearings.
He said they should determine a sale price by mid to late March.
Yahoo! paid $10,000 per acre for its current property, but Morris said
other Quincy-area properties have since sold for some $30,000 per acre.
Yahoo! spent $12 million last year to transform half of Wenatchee’s
Confluence Technology Center into a data center. |
