*** East Wenatchee Sets Motor Scooter Rules ***

East Wenatchee, Washington -- 02/28/2007
Kids under age 16 caught riding motor scooters
in East Wenatchee from now on could have their
rides confiscated by the cops.



The City Council passed by a 5-2 vote regulations on
motor scooters at a meeting Tuesday night requiring that:

Motor scooter drivers have a valid state driver’s license.

Riders wear helmets.

Scooters have mufflers

Motor scooter sellers tell buyers about city restrictions

The new law says police can impound scooters driven by kids
under 16 years old. Only parents can reclaim impounded scooters,
at a cost of $50, according to the new rules.

Councilman Wayne Barnhart said government is overstepping
its bounds by regulating the safety of scooter riders, especially
since there have been no scooter accidents reported in the city.
Along with Councilwoman Sandra McCourt, Barnhart voted
against the measure.

Police Chief Randy Harrison said the regulations are driven
by 20 complaints from residents about noise and the potential
for accidents.

Said Councilman Chuck Johnson:
“If it’s going to save one kid from a serious accident,
I think it’s worth it.”

Wenatchee passed a similar law in 2003.
