Update - Wenatchee Brush Fire North Of Easy Street
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/07/2007 at 11:00pm
Approximately 150 firefighters from Chelan and Douglas Counties are
working to contain a 150 acre wildland fire in an Urban area northwest
of the City of Wenatchee.
The human caused fire started on private property,
and quickly spread uphill, driven by winds gusting to 20+ mph.
Two helicopters continued to drop water on hot spots, attempting to
stop the spread of fast moving flames through grass and sagebrush.
Two Air Tankers out of Canada were called in to drop retardant along
with a single engine air tanker from the Bureau of Indian affairs.
Bulldozers from a local contractor were called in to help put a line
around the north flank of the fire. Five forest service hand crews
battled the shifting flames in an attempt to halt the fire’s spread to
nearby neighborhoods.
Approximately 240 homes bordering easy street and north as well
as east of Warm Springs Canyon, were notified of the moving fire.
Roughly 40 homes, under level 3, were asked to leave their residences.
Another 100 households under level 2 were notified to be prepared to
leave at a moments notice and another 100, under level 1 were notified
to listen to their local news outlets for any further instructions.
Hand crews will continue to fight the fire through the night.
Fire Chief Randy Johnson, Chelan County Fire District #1,
stated he hoped to have the fire contained by Sunday afternoon.
Evacuations are as follows:
Level 3
evacuation has been issued for all of Warm Springs Canyon and
Sunrise Ln., West Eagle Rock from American Fruit Rd on the West
side of West Eagle Rock, and includes all of April Drive on the west
side. Burch Mnt. Road at the end of the pavement is close and is
level 3. Upper Burch Mnt. Is closed to all recreational users.

side and also includes Lovell Rd, Anna Ln. and all of Rue Jolie,
as well as all of Crestview and Knowles Rd., from Rolling Hills.

part of School St., to include all of Birch Mnt. Rd. at Tarn Pl, all of
Tarn Pl. and Heather Ln., Mahogany Ln., Teakwood Ln., all of Rolling
Hills Ln and Morning Wind Ln. _________________ Geneb...Wenatchee,Washington-USA

*** Wildfires Reported Near Wenatchee, Nighthawk ***
( The Columbian, Clark County, Washington Report )
WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) -- 07/07/2007
A brush fire driven by gusty winds prompted an order to evacuate
about 30 homes Saturday in the Warm Springs Canyon area west
of here.
The fire was reported about 2:15 p.m. near the Highline Canal,
and had covered about 250 acres of brush and sage by Saturday
evening.
About 200 homes were threatened by the fire, and at least two
outbuildings were damaged, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum
said.
The fire's cause was not immediately known, Harum said.
About 100 firefighters, plus retardant dropping aircraft,
were on the scene, said Jim Duck, operations coordinator
for the Central Washington Interagency Dispatch Center.
Meanwhile, a brush fire that started early Saturday near the old mining
town of Nighthawk in northeastern Washington near the Canadian border
grew to about 1,000 acres.
About 100 firefighters, supported by U.S. and Canadian aircraft, battled
the fire near Nighthawk, just west of Oroville, said Lynn Kenworthy, a
dispatch supervisor with the state Department of Natural Resources.
The fire was burning in grass, sage and scattered timber on federal
Bureau of Land Management land, and no structures were threatened.
No figure was immediately available for what percentage of the fire
was contained, but retardant drops significantly slowed its progress,
Kenworthy said.
"We don't know if that's going to hold through the night,
but it's looking good," she said.
The fire's cause was not immediately available.
A small brush fire that started Friday night near Tieton in Yakima
County was contained by midday Saturday. The four-acre fire
destroyed a warehouse.
No injuries had been reported at any of the fires. _________________ Geneb...Wenatchee,Washington-USA

*** 250 Homes Evacuated As Wildfire Burns Near Wenatchee ***
WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) ( Yakima Herald ) -- 07/08/2007
High winds overnight helped spread a brush fire burning several hundred
acres and threatening homes in a subdivision three miles northwest of
this town in central Washington.
By Sunday, between 250 and 270 homes had been evacuated and more
were under alert as winds pushed the fire east toward the Eagle Rock
Subdivision in the Warm Springs Canyon area.
Fire officials hadn't yet gotten a good look at the blaze, but estimated it
between 800 and 1,000 acres, said Jeri Freimuth, a fire information officer.
At least three outbuildings have been destroyed and a few
houses damaged, she said. No injuries were reported.
There were no containment estimates as of Sunday morning.
"It's a pretty dynamic situation at this point. Until we can get people i
n there to see what the situation is we don't know," Freimuth said.
The fire was reported about 2:15 p.m. Saturday near the Highline Canal.
It was determined to be human caused, according to a news release
issued by Chelan County Fire District 1 officials.
Roughly 200 firefighters from around the state have responded to the fire.
Sustained winds were expected throughout the day, with warm weather
forecast for the next few days as well as increased chances of lighting.
In northeastern Washington, a brush fire had burned about 1,000 acres
near the old mining town of Nighthawk near the Canadian border.
The fire just west of Oroville was burning in grass, sage and scattered
timber on federal Bureau of Land Management land, and no structures
were threatened.
Retardant drops helped to significantly slow the fire's progress Saturday,
but no figure was immediately available for what percentage of the fire
was contained.
It's cause was not immediately available Sunday.

*** Fire Grows And Officials Expand Evacuation Warning ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/08/2007
Fire crews working throughout the night Saturday were unable to
control a wildfire north of Wenatchee. The fire grew overnight from
150 acres to between an estimated 800 to 1,000 acres.
Stronger than expected winds helped the fire grow as darkness
limited the ability of firefighters to combat what authorities say
is a human-caused blaze.
The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office issued an expanded evacuation
notice about 3 a.m. today. The notice recommends that residents of
about 270 homes evacuate.
The fire moved west toward Warner Canyon and threatened homes
above Easy Street early this morning. Winds also drove the fire east
into Warm Springs Canyon and at about 4 a.m. the eastern flank of t
he fire crossed the canyon and began moving uphill into the Eaglerock
subdivision.
No homes have been destroyed by the fire,
Wenatchee Police Sgt. Cherie Smith said Sunday.
Fire crews from throughout the state were called in to combat the fire
earlier today. More than 200 firefighters are working on the fire, which
is the first major wildfire of the summer, said Lt. Patrick Lonergan, public
information officer for Chelan County Fire District 1, said.
The fire started about 2:20 p.m. Saturday in the mouth of a canyon west
of Warm Springs Canyon and just north of Easy Street. It was less than
a mile west of the intersection of Easy Street and American Fruit Road.
The Apple Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has arranged for
the Wenatchee Seventh-day Adventist Church to be used as shelter for
anyone leaving their homes.

A 20-year-old Wenatchee man suspected of starting the Easy Street Fire
was identified by police Sunday evening. Police say the man's identity
won't be released until he is arrested and charged.
The fire, which was burning around 200 acres at 4 a.m. Sunday,
had grown to 5800 acres by 6 p.m. Sunday. Crews say they expect
increased winds to feed the fire overnight. They continue to use four
tankers and two helicopters to fight the blaze.
Sunday afternoon some residents were allowed back into their homes
after fire crews successfully forced a 3000-acre brush fire burning
northwest of Wenatchee to move in a different direction.
The fire continues to burn around 3000 acres. Between 250 and 270
homes were evacuated and more were put on alert as winds pushed
the fire east and north toward the Eaglerock Subdivision in the Warm
Springs Canyon area.
Around 3:30 p.m. people in level three evacuation
zones were readmitted to there residences.
At least three outbuildings have been destroyed and a
few houses damaged since the fire started Saturday.

5,800 Acres Burned In Wenatchee Fire,
But Evacuation Alerts Are Lowered
WENATCHEE, WASH. (KXLY-tv Spokane ) -- 07/08/2007
High winds have helped spread a brush fire near Wenatchee to
5,800 acres, but authorities have lowered evacuation levels.
The Easy Street Fire is burning near the Eagle Rock Subdivision in
the Warm Springs Canyon area, three miles northwest of Wenatchee.
The fire has grown from 800 acres Sunday morning to 5,800 acres in
the afternoon. The fire has been pushing to the north, helped by the
strong winds.
Between 250 and 270 homes have been evacuated and more are
under alert. Three outbuildings have been destroyed, but no homes
have been destroyed despite the ongoing threat. But late Sunday
afternoon, according to a spokeswoman with the Chelan County Fire
District #1, all Level 3 evacuations have been reduced to Level 2.
Level 3 evacuations are the highest level, when authorities recommend
leaving homes. A Level 2 notice just asks residents to be ready to leave.
Over 200 firefighters and 30 engines are battling the blaze, along
with three planes and four helicopters. One firefighter was treated
for dehydration on Saturday evening.
The fire started Saturday afternoon in Warm Springs Canyon,
northwest of Wenatchee, and is believed to be human caused.
A statewide mobilization was ordered early Sunday morning.
Sustained winds were expected throughout the day, with warm weather
forecast for the next few days as well as increased chances of lighting.

*** Easy Street Fire Now Top NW Priority ***
Wenatchee, Washington ( Wenatchee World ) -- 07/08/2007
The estimated 5,800-acre wildland fire north of Sunnyslope is the No. 1
priority for fire leaders in the Northwest, officials told about 25 residents
who gathered Sunday evening to hear the latest on the fire that
threatened many of their homes.
A Type II command has been established for the fire, said Marsh Hoskins
of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, incident commander for the
team taking over command of the fire Sunday night.
Hoskins, speaking at a public meeting held at the Chelan County PUD
auditorium, explained that the Type II command would allow authorities
to bring in a few more people and create a support structure that would
allow for firefighters to work around the clock for multiple days. "We're
feeling good about it," Hoskins said of plans to aggressively attack the
fire Sunday night.
Some 300 residences received Level III evacuation notices overnight
Saturday and Sunday morning. Those were reduced to Level II notices
Sunday afternoon.
But when a resident asked if the evacuation threat was over, Chelan
County Sheriff Mike Harum said officials could not promise that the
evacuation concerns would not increase again.
About 200 firefighters working Sunday were able to continue to
prevent any homes from being destroyed as of Sunday evening.
Hoskins told the crowd about plans to attack the fire on its eastern and
western flanks Sunday night, but officials acknowledged that winds which
reached sustained speeds of 20 mph and gusted to between 30 and 40
mph overnight Saturday, according to Chelan County Fire District 1
Chief Randy Johnson would be key in whether the fire could be contained.
Hoskins said firefighters had set a goal of keeping the fire from
spreading into Swakane Canyon on its northern edge. "If firefighters
are unsuccessful, our three-day fire is not going to be a three-day fire,
it's going to be a multiple-day fire," Hoskins said.
Forecasts called for only 12 to 15 mph winds overnight Saturday, said
Johnson, so the higher winds caught firefighters by surprise and caused
the fire to mushroom. According to the National Weather Service, winds
were expected to be between 7 and 11 mph Sunday night in the National
Weather Service fire zone that includes Chelan County.
Firefighters had hoped Saturday night to keep the fire from spreading
east across Warm Springs Canyon, but winds made it impossible, said
Johnson, who said the fire "looked like a blowtorch coming out of that
canyon."
The fire was first reported at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday.
Johnson said, "When we arrived at the scene, we already
had fire climbing up the hillside pretty quickly." After the
meeting, Hoskins credited the mobilization of regional
resources to the fire this morning including three planes
that dropped fire retardant onto the fire all day with helping
save homes.
He also described firefighters using a "bump and run" firefighting
tactic to protect clusters of homes, basically forcing the fire one way,
then shuttling resources to meet the new approach of the fire until it
had bypassed homes. He said the fire was about 15 percent contained,
mainly along its southeast and southwest sides.
If the fire no longer is seen as such a threat to structures Monday,
Hoskins said he didn't know if the same resources - particularly the
planes - would still be available to fire officials.

*** Fire Threat Eases Near Wenatchee ***
Firefighters protect hundreds of houses
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/08/2007
Winds whipped a wildfire to 5,800 acres Sunday, but firefighters
managed to protect hundreds of homes that were threatened by
the flames.
Between 250 and 270 homes were under evacuation advisories,
but those that had been under mandatory evacuation orders were
downgraded, allowing residents to return home, said Rick Isaacson,
a spokesman for the Easy Street Fire.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, one from dehydration.
The human-caused fire was burning near the Eaglerock Subdivision
in the Warm Springs Canyon area, about three miles northwest of
Wenatchee.
Winds gusting to 20-30 mph were pushing the fire to the north and
east, away from houses, Isaacson said Sunday evening. There was
no estimate when it would be contained, he said.
At least three outbuildings were destroyed,
and several houses were damaged, Isaacson said.
The fire was reported about 2:15 p.m.
Saturday near the Highline Canal.
Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum told The Wenatchee World that a man
playing with fireworks may have sparked the fire and could be arrested
for investigation of reckless burning.
About 200 firefighters were battling the blaze, supported by 30 engines,
four helicopters with water buckets and three retardant-dropping tanker
planes.
Winds remained in the forecast, Isaacson said, with warm weather
forecast for the next few days as well as increased chances of lighting.
"It looks like it's calmed down a little bit, but it's unpredictable,"
he said.
In northeastern Washington, a brush fire had burned about 1,000 to
1,200 acres near the old mining town of Nighthawk near the Canadian
border.
The fire just west of Oroville was burning in grass, sage and scattered
timber on federal Bureau of Land Management land, and no structures
were threatened.
It's cause was not known Sunday.

*** Wenatchee Fire Evacuees Allowed To Return Home ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/09/2007
Photo - As a hillside smolders in the distance, a plane drops fire retardant
near homes on Burch Mountain Road near Wenatchee Sunday afternoon.
Fireworks may have sparked the fire, which consumed 5,800 acres.
Emergency officials allowed evacuated residents of more than 250
homes to return late Sunday after a fire northwest of Wenatchee
consumed 5,800 acres.
Because of heavy smoke, it is unclear how many homeowners returned,
said Rick Isaacson, spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
A Red Cross shelter was open Sunday night.
By Sunday afternoon, fire had damaged three or four homes,
though none were lost. Winds gusting to 20-30 mph were pushing
the fire to the north and east, away from houses, Isaacson said
Sunday evening. There was no estimate when it would be contained,
he said.
The fire started about 2:20 p.m. Saturday near Warm Springs Canyon,
and by Sunday afternoon crews were arriving from around the state.
Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum told The Wenatchee World that a man
playing with fireworks may have sparked the fire and could be arrested
for investigation of reckless burning.
On Sunday, approximately 200 firefighters were working on the blaze,
as well as 30 fire engines. Air support was provided by four helicopters
and three fire-retardant tankers. Incident Commander Keith Satterfield
said crews worked hard in difficult conditions.
Elsewhere in the state on Sunday, a brush fire that started Saturday
had burned 1,000 to 1,200 acres near the old mining town of Nighthawk,
Okanogan County, near the Canadian border.
The fire, just west of Oroville, was burning in grass, sage and scattered
timber on federal Bureau of Land Management land; no structures were
threatened.
Its cause was not immediately available.

*** Easy Street Fire Update ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/09/2007
Firefighters are mopping up a wildfire that burned
more than ten s quare miles near Wenatchee.
A spokeswoman at fire command headquarters, Cynthia Bork,
says about 200 firefighters remain on the scene amid concern
that winds could fan flames again in grass and brush.
The fire threatened about 250 homes over the weekend and
residents were advised to prepare to evacuate. Fire information
officer Rick Isaacson says several houses were damaged, but
no homes were lost. Three outbuildings were destroyed.
Easy Street Fire blamed on fireworks
Charges are pending against the person believed to
have caused the 68 hundred acre Easy Street Fire.
Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum says a group of eight
young adults were playing paintball Saturday when one
member in the group deployed a smoke bomb.
The fire, reported around two Saturday afternoon, originated
just west of Warm Springs, a couple of hundred yards from
Easy Street.
Fire weather
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning
for wildfire danger this afternoon in the Okanogan and Methow
Valleys, including Winthrop and Omak.
Forecasters say high temperatures, with gusty winds and
low humidity create the potential for a fast moving fire.

*** Fire Threat Said To Be Dwindling ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 07/09/2007
Firefighters expect to have the Easy Street Fire completely
contained by 6 p.m. Tuesday and have reduced the estimated
size of the blaze to about 5,200 acres.
The number of firefighters on the scene north of Wenatchee should
also begin to shrink Tuesday morning, Greg Thayer, a spokesman
for firefighting officials, said Monday.
Thayer said officials reduced the estimated size of the burned area
after heavy smoke cleared Monday, giving firefighters a better view
of the burn area.
Crews with hand tools and bulldozers are working to complete fire
lines around the fire, Thayer said. The blaze was 80 percent contained
Monday afternoon and should be completely contained by 6 p.m.
Tuesday, he said.
About 300 firefighters are working on the blaze.
Monday afternoon, a few engines still patrolled the neighborhoods
between Warm Springs Canyon and Burch Mountain Road, keeping
watch for smoke or embers that could threaten homes.
Due to the light winds the fire did not move much Monday,
Thayer said.
However the threat is still at Level II, meaning
residents should be prepared to evacuate their homes.
Around four homes were damaged and
three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
One suffered heat exhaustion, but is now back on duty.
Two other firefighters were injured
in the eye but also returned to work.
A calm Monday followed a cooler Sunday
that helped firefighters corral the blaze.
"The temperatures cooled down, which allowed the fire to just
sort of lay there and do a lot of smoldering," said Rick Isaacson,
a spokesman for Washington Emergency Management.
Isaacson said the fire continued to move east Monday morning,
away from homes but closer to Burch Mountain. That's a big
concern for firefighters.
"There's a lot of timber out there, which can be a problem,"
he said Monday morning. "If it gets into Swakane Canyon,
then it's a bigger problem. Preventing it from going there is
a big priority. If it gets there we'll be here for weeks, not days."
Officials believe the fire was sparked by a fireworks smoke bomb.
At about 1 a.m. Sunday, a statewide mobilization order was
approved that brought crews from around the state to the scene.
Additional aid was called in, raising the count of firefighters
attacking the blaze to nearly 300 and the number of fire
engines on the scene to more than 60, Isaacson said.
The lower temperatures allowed crews to build a dozer line on the
western flank, which connected to a manmade fire line. Isaacson
said the fire line should prevent the blaze from spreading west.
The additional fire engines on site worked fire patrols overnight,
moving from various hot spots and assisting with structure
protection in the Eagle Rock development.
Chuck Gulick, a public information officer for the Department
of Natural Resources, said crews will continue to strengthen the
northwestern and northeastern fire lines today. He also said he
expects the fire will continue east, eventually reaching Highway
97A.
"It's almost a foregone conclusion that the fire will make its way
to Highway 97A. If it does that, the smoke or debris could make
for a temporary closure, but our goal is to minimize any type of
closure if one happens," he said.
Gulick added that he anticipated firefighting efforts to go smoothly
Monday. "It looks calm today, but if it's true to form as things have
been the last couple of days, we'll probably see a few flare-ups and
plumes of smoke, depending on the wind," he said.
The fire started about 2:20 p.m. Saturday in the mouth of a canyon
west of Warm Springs Canyon and just north of Easy Street, less than
a mile west of the intersection of Easy Street and American Fruit Road.
Fire officials had expected cooler evening temperatures and a lack
of wind to assist firefighting efforts Saturday night. However, wind
gusts of 30 to 40 mph overnight allowed the fire to grow from 150
acres Saturday night to 500 acres early Sunday morning and
eventually to 5,800 acres by Sunday evening.
Because the fire continued to move away from houses, residents
who were asked to evacuate Saturday were allowed to return to
their homes Sunday afternoon. Road closures in the area of the fire
remain in effect, and officials are still asking residents to be ready
to evacuate at a moment's notice. Officials estimated that 250 to
270 homes were evacuated.
Rocky and sloped terrain has made fighting the fire difficult.
Four helicopters dropped water on hot spots throughout the weekend,
attempting to stop the spread of fast-moving flames through grass and
sagebrush, and three air tankers dropped retardant to combat the blaze.
Gulick said on Sunday a helicopter's drop bucket collided with a fire
engine, damaging the engine's windshield. No one was injured.
On Saturday an 18-year-old firefighter working for the U.S.
Forest Service suffered heat exhaustion and was sent to Central
Washington Hospital for treatment. His name and condition have
not been released. Another firefighter suffered a minor injury
Sunday, according to Isaacson. The firefighter's name, agency
and type of injury was not made available. No other injuries have
been reported.
