UCI BMX Worlds opens with seven Amercian golds on day one.
Photo - The 2008 UCI BMX World Championships started strong
for the U.S. with Americans scoring seven gold medals in the 14
Challenge Class contests on opening day.
The UCI BMX World Championships kicked-off in Taiyuan, China on
May 29th with several impressive American performances in the amateur
“Challenge Class” division. Out of 20 total American competitors in the
under -14 age divisions, the United States had 13 riders finish in the final
eight with seven of those amateur athletes earning gold medals in the
World Challenge.
The first day of competition in the four-day long event warmed up with
the five to 14-year-old boys and girls hitting the track in Taiyuan.
The U.S. swept the five-six, seven, eight and nine-year-old boys’ age
divisions. Wyatt Bell (Berthoud, Colo.) took the win in the youngest age
group, while Ethan Wolthers (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) earned his second
world gold at the age of seven. Quentin Crowley (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Tyler Fuller (Henderson, Nev.) took home world titles in the eight and
nine-year old divisions respectively. Brock Heffron (Chandler, Ariz.)
repeated that feat in the 11-year-old age bracket as did 12-year-old
Alden Volle (Penryn, Calif.). The lone American girl to win a world title
on the day was Shayona Glynn (Norco, Calif.) in the 13-year-old age
division.
The competition continues Friday with challenge class competitors from
age 15 to 30+ contesting for a world title. Saturday’s “main event” will
feature the world’s best junior and elite men and women fighting it out
for the title of World Champion. All non-Olympic discipline “Cruiser Class”
races will take place on Sunday for both the Challenge and Championship
classes.
