Pakistan's coach 'was strangled'
Pakistan's cricket coach Bob Woolmer was murdered in his hotel room on Sunday after the team's World Cup shock defeat to Ireland, Jamaican police say.
A post-mortem examination established that the former England player had died as a result of "manual strangulation", police commissioner Lucius Thomas said.
"In these circumstances, the matter of Mr Woolmer's death is now being treated as murder," he told a news conference.
Police say Mr Woolmer may have known his killer or killers.
Mr Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious by staff at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Sunday morning.
Police said there were no signs of forced entry into his room and none of his possessions had been taken. Authorities are studying CCTV footage from the hotel.
The deputy commissioner of the Jamaican police, Mark Shields, said this might now be a hunt for more than one killer, and urged the perpetrators to hand themselves in.
"Bob was a large man. It would have taken some significant force to subdue him," he said, adding that police were ruling nothing out and had "lots of lines of inquiry".
"I have to say at this stage that it looks as if it may be somebody who's somehow linked to him, because clearly he let somebody into his hotel room and it may be that he knew who that person was," Mr Shields told the BBC.
Mr Shields also "unequivocally dismissed" Indian television reports that arrests had been made.
"That's nonsense, as far as I'm concerned. There's actually no truth in that," he said.
The BBC's Andy Gallacher in Kingston says that Bob Woolmer's murder has stunned the cricketing world and left the World Cup in disarray.
Speculation that this may be connected to gambling cartels is only adding to the confusion surrounding his tragic death, our correspondent says.
On Thursday, Jamaican police questioned members of Pakistan's cricket squad over the death.
The Pakistan cricket squad have been questioned by police
After being interviewed for about an hour and fingerprinted, the team left for the resort of Montego Bay.
They were due to return to Pakistan on Saturday but our correspondent says it is not known if they will be allowed to leave as planned.
Pakistan team spokesman Pervez Jamil Mir said the players were "in a state of shock" over the news that Mr Woolmer had been killed.
However, the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), said the competition would continue as planned to "demonstrate that cricket cannot be put off by a cowardly criminal act".
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said the entire cricket community was shocked by the death of the former England Test batsman and South Africa coach.
He said: "Everyone connected with this event will assist the police in any way possible to ensure the truth emerges."
During his career, Woolmer also coached South Africa and enjoyed great success coaching in English county cricket, winning four trophies in two seasons with Warwickshire.

Aussies make 322.
Hayden in good form (about bloody time!)....gets the quckest World Cup century ever (off 66 balls) against the number-1 team in the World, and then follows it up with the biggest score by an Aussie in World Cup history (158 runs) against the home nation.
Rain washed out the match.
Windies will bat tomorrow chasing 323 for the win. |

And the Proteas did decide it.
The Poms were garbage, to be honest.....Fletcher has to go now, surely? |

Yeah, a bloke called Peter Moores is the new coach.
I heard the Aussie, Tom Moody, was in with a chance...but obviously, they've given it to this other bloke. |

once again read earlier posts by me. fletcher does not believe in one day fookin cricket. that statement was backed up by english display (or lack of it) this winter. collingwood and KP won the commonwealth series, it had fook all to do with anyone else.
have become a sri lanka fan given the pricks left in this. moody may have had a chance with us, but hes off to some aussies, and given hes from there, why try outbid an agreed conract _________________ “If I ask you to play five-a-sides, you don’t say ‘what position?’ You just play,”

Do you really believe that?
Firstly, Ponting stated last year that the 3 'goals' over the next 12 months were:
1. Win the "Champions Trophy"
2. Win back the Ashes
3. Win the World Cup
What you're saying, is that the only goal Fletcher has had over the last 12 months, was to hold onto the Ashes....as the other "important" cricket tournaments apart from the Ashes, are one-day tournaments.
If that was the case, then after the 5-0 whitewash, he should have resigned then, if one-day cricket was not one of his priorities, especially leading into the World Cup...a tournament held only every 4 years.
Secondly, let's say that you're right, and Fletcher doesn't give a fat rat's clacker about one day cricket.......surely the players have some sort of respect and dignity anyway?
Jacob Oram, the Kiwi all-rounder, had an injured finger before the World Cup, and was in doubt to play at all....and he stated that if the finger had to be amputated, so he could play in the World Cup, then he'd do it.
Now....if the World Cup is so important for non-English players....like Oram and Ponting....then surely, the English players are just as keen to do well in a tournament that is one of the pinnacles of the sport?
If they don't feel this way, then maybe the new coach needs to start by blooding a new first XI who DO want to win and do well when playing for their country. |

Into the final....one to go....
This is our 4th World Cup final in a row, and to be fair, I think Australia and the Lankans are the two best teams going around.
I think the Lankans are a very good team.
We'll go in favourites, and deservedly so....(we've won the last 2 World Cups, and 28 World Cup matches in a row!)...but the Lankans have a bowling attack that can trouble the Aussie batsmen, as well as a good batting line-up that can attack the Aussie bowlers.
I'm expecting a close game...and one that could go either way.... |

Least the 2 form teams got to the final again.
Just hope the sri lanks can give you lot a match and not buckle under the pressure like india in the last final _________________ "There are several sacred things in this world you don't ever mess with. They won't buckle.
They have an Aussie as coach.
Plus they have been very good tactically....in that the only time we have played them in this tournament, they rested Malinga, Vaas, and Murali.....so a few of our batsmen have never faced these bowlers prior to this upcoming Final.
That is an advantage for the Lankans.
While we deserve to be favourites....do not discount the Lankans....it will be a LOT tougher match than what some people realise.... |
